Description

Smudging is a powerful practice! But why is smudging so powerful? The answer lies in the world of spiritual energy. Homes and bodies are not just made of just the physical matter; they also vibrate with quiet, invisible energy. Cleansing a space or ourselves with techniques such as smudging helps cleanse away all the emotional and psychic ‘trash’ that may have gathered over the last few days, months, years or even hundreds of years. In a very real way, it is a form of spiritual spring cleaning! Additionally, smudging can turn any space, no matter where, into a calming sanctuary – a place of renewal and increased happiness by clearing the energy of the space.

Smudging and Blessing Herbs

  • Cedar

Cedar is a medicine of protection. Cedar trees are very old, wise and powerful spirits. Cedar is often used to cleanse a home or apartment when first moving in, inviting unwanted spirits to leave and protecting a person, place or object from unwanted influences. Cedar is used as a name for a number of different genuses of trees and shrubs. The primary ones are Cedrus, Thuja, Libdocedrus and Juniperus. The Junipers are not truly Cedars (scientifically) but are used as such by many people. Keep in mind that these scientific names have little meaning to the people using them as medicine in traditional ways.

Smudging

To use a smudge bundle, sweetgrass braid, incense or palo santo stick simply light one end until it it turns orange or is very hot. Then carefully blow out the flame and set the object somewhere safe such as a bowl of sand or an incense holder. Then allow the smoke to move through the room. To cleanse yourself or an object, just pass through the smoke. To cleanse your space, just walk around with the smudge while it is smoking.

Fire is powerful and deserves respect! Please be mindful when using this item.

The act of smudging is also done with a smudge bowl or Abalone Shell with the appropriate herbs directly lit or burned on a coal or Charcoal Tablet. When using charcoal tablets, the bowl or shell should be filled with sand or a flat stone to prevent overheating the container. Smudging is also done with herbs tied in bundles called Smudge Sticks. In either case the smoke is 'washed' over the person or object with a Feather or by fanning the smoke with one's hand.

To do a blessing of a person, begin by looking into the eyes of the person for a moment to 'greet' them, fan the smoke first at their heart and then up to the right side (your left) of the person's
